Innovative energy storage for the home

The start-up company Volterion develops innovative batteries for domestic use to store power from renewable energy sources – especially from solar power. The stacks are more compact, lighter, cheaper and more powerful than the state of the art and offer private users the opportunity to make efficient use of the electricity they generate themselves.

Using self-generated power helps private households to reduce costs and helps to protect the electricity grid from being overloaded on sunny and windy days. However, until now only around 2.5 per cent of the solar power produced in Germany was used for personal consumption. For newer photovoltaic systems in particular, for which the feed-in tariff and internal consumption payment is lower or no longer exists, a storage solution is becoming more and more attractive. Volterion’s Redox flow stacks offer good prospects in this context with their higher efficiency, simple installation and scalable capacity.

Volterion batteries have an output of 2-30 kW and are the size of an (American) refrigerator. They can increase the consumption of self-generated power from around 30 to 80%.



New innovative design offers numerous benefits

Volterion is a spin-off of the Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety, and Energy Technology (UMSICHT) and is based on innovations developed there for which patents have been filed. The Redox flow stacks are about the size of an American refrigerator and are scalable in output between 2 and 30 kilowatts (kW). They can increase the consumption of self-generated power from around 30 to 80 per cent. This makes them very different to previous Redox flow batteries. The stacks are now welded and do not need seals. This means they are leakproof and more compact in design; this saves on costs and weight and makes installation easier.

Longer-lasting and more eco-friendly than lithium-ion batteries

Volterion’s seal-free Redox flow stacks are now becoming serious economic competitors for established types of batteries such as lithium-ion batteries. In comparison to these products the stacks last longer, are more environmentally friendly and are extremely safe, thanks to the non-flammable electrolytes used. The power section made of plastic and the electrolyte storage section can be separated easily. In addition, electrolytes do not age and can be reused – which is beneficial for the environment.

Serial production is scheduled to start in Dortmund in 2017. Demand is already high. If it is successful, the system could make a considerable contribution to the integration of renewable energies.
