Strom09: BVB for climate protection

Switching from one electricity supplier to another is quick and easy. The information currently available on green electricity is good and the price difference to normal electricity is often slight. Nevertheless, an additional incentive is often needed for actual change – even with those who feel positively towards renewable energies and the Energiewende.

With Strom09, Borussia Dortmund (BVB) uses its strong brand, its high public profile and its emotional binding force to promote green electricity and to encourage people to make the change. The project idea was developed by Borussia Dortmund and jointly implemented with green energy supplier "Lichtblick".

Engine for progress:

  • innovative project to promote green electricity
  • use of the strong BVB09 brand
  • high credibility through leading by example
  • further social and ecological projects

Together with the BVB Foundation known as “leuchte auf” (light up), Strom09 is also committed to innovative social projects in the field of education. In this context, for example, it was possible to provide a “hand bike” for a primary school in Dortmund, which enables the children to charge mobile devices using muscle power.

Joint savings of 25,000 tonnes of CO2

In total, the change to green electricity is expected save 25,000 tonnes of CO2 (1 tonne for every seat on the stadium’s south terrace). Approximately 10,000 tonnes of savings are shown on the counter placed prominently over the main entrance of Signal Iduna Park, as well as on the internet. Moreover, the Strom09 customers are named here.
As an additional incentive, participants receive exclusive fan items that are not available on general sale, and a credit of 1 kWh per point gained in the 2014/2015 season. Further mobilisation measures result, for example the 'KlimaLiga' (climate league) for fan clubs. Here, the aim is to win the 'KlimaPott' (climate pot). The winner is awarded the title of Green Champion alongside the German Champions.

The club as a pioneer

But the whole thing is only convincing if the club leads the way, and this is being done by Borussia Dortmund in a very resolute manner. In addition to its own solar energy collector on the stadium roof, green electricity is exclusively used to operate the stadium, the training grounds, the administration and the fan shop.
Further activities by the BVB foundation are also connected with Strom09. In reaching defined milestones along the way to the savings goal, a social project or an environmental initiative in Dortmund and vicinity are supported respectively. In this way, amateur sports clubs in Dortmund, for example, are currently being supported with energy-efficient renovations.
