energieland 2050: Climate protection in the district of Steinfurt

The District of Steinfurt is implementing the transformation of the energy system locally, together with municipalities, companies and citizens, and aims to be energy self-sufficient by 2050. With the "Master Plan 100% Climate Protection", a funding project by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety, the path is being cleared for this vision to be realised. With this master plan, the district is pursuing ambitious targets: to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by around 95 per cent in comparison with 1990 by 2050 and to halve final energy demand.

Engine for progress:

  • The district is becoming self-sufficient in terms of energy
  • 23 household save 70 tonnes of CO2
  • 21,000 households are supplied with green electricity
  • 400 ambassadors for Energieland2050
  • New perspectives as power-saving advisors
  • Collaboration with FH Münster (Münster University of Applied Sciences) and the University of Münster

The development of wind power is a key element in achieving the District of Steinfurt's climate protection goals. On the basis of a wind potential analysis, the potentials were determined for the cities and communities within the district.

Wind power and citizens' energy are advancing the district's cause

The Wind Energy Service Centre for the District of Steinfurt is a central contact point for all participants in the development of local wind power potentials. The citizens' wind park guidelines it has prepared aim to make the development of wind power transparent with maximum participation by the local population.

Energy Landscape Hollich

This initiative by the District of Steinfurt and Hollich agricultural and energy farmers consists of a citizens' wind park, several biogas plants, a biogas pipeline and the operation of local heating networks to supply both private and public properties using satellite CHPs. Electricity production enables (on balance) the provision of approximately 21,000 households. A service company and a citizens' energy cooperative have also been established.

Entrepreneurs' Network energieland2050

The climate protection activities contribute to regional added value and the retention of skilled workers. The "Entrepreneurs' Network Energieland2050" (Unternehmernetzwerk energieland2050), which consists of about 50 local companies and institutions, is getting behind this topic.

Households as key participants

In the "Climate Protection Citizens" ("Klimaschutzbürger") project, 23 households tested how climate protection could work in the everyday life over a period of one year and saved a total of 70 tonnes of CO2. With the follow-up project, "energieland2050 Ambassadors" ("energieland2050 Botschafter"), the district is seeking people who can act as effective multipliers for climate protection and would like to integrate climate protection measures into their everyday life.
