Industrial Recycling on a Grand Scale at the Lünen Lippe Plant

Three key areas of competence for REMONDIS at the Lünen production site ensure that resources are saved and CO2 emissions can be prevented. At the Lippe plant, pre-products for industry are made from industrial and household waste, waste and residual materials are converted into fuels and, last but not least, biomass is prepared and used as a source of energy for biomass power plants. Within these three areas of competence, about 416,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases are saved annually.

In numerous plants at the REMONDIS site in Lünen, various forms of waste are processed and prepared for further use: Plastics are turned into granulates and slag is turned into metal. For example, sodium aluminate is recovered for wastewater treatment and as a binder and whitening agent. Part of the sodium aluminate produced in the alumin plant is used for the production of white pigments for the plaster and paper industry. FGD gypsum, which is created in the desulphurisation of flue gases from fossil-fuel power stations, is processed and refined to produce binders.

From waste to fuel

Another plant on site ensures that waste from meat production, in particular from animal fats, is transformed into biodiesel. This plant has the largest single climate impact on site and leads to a saving of 160,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases per year.

Optimal use of biomass

Recycling is not only performed for industry but also for agriculture and private households. The compost and soil plant processes more than 70,000 tonnes of green and organic waste as well as scrap wood, thus saving 7,000 tonnes of CO2 per year. However, not all of the green waste delivered is suitable for recycling. But the remaining material is also used energetically for biomass power plants and therefore serves as a renewable energy source that replaces a large quantity of electricity generated using fossil fuels – approximately 160,000 MWh per year.
