Adapting to climate change - but how?

In the dynaklim project, important stakeholders from the Emscher-Lippe Region (Ruhr district) are working on implementation-oriented measures as well as concepts and solutions for adaptation to climate change. The aim here is to network those responsible in the fields of science, business and politics, to transfer knowledge, to analyse potentials and to execute pilot projects on adaptation to climate change.

The problem of flooding is one which various regions will have to deal with to an even greater extent in the future. The central concern is water, with regard to the forecast rise in temperature and the changed precipitation distributions in the region. Because even under changed climate conditions, the provision with high-quality drinking water has to be guaranteed and flood damage has to be prevented.

Engine for progress:

  • comprehensive adaptation project for the Emscher-Lippe region
  • large participant network on the subject of water
  • roadmap 2020 as a programme of measures
  • transferable to further regions as an approach

The comprehensive subject fields of the dynaklim project include all relevant aspects.

dynaklim-Roadmap 2020

dynaklim is successfully pursuing two goals to this end: On the one hand, the dynaklim network is in the spotlight, where various regional stakeholders from the fields of politics, administration, business and society come together to exchange anticipatory views on the subject of adapting to climate change.

On the other hand, the "Roadmap 2020 – Regional Climate Adaptation" was initiated and has been consistently implemented within this network. This includes a detailed programme of measures for the region in five subject fields:

  • Water sensitive urban development
  • Secure water supply
  • Competing water use
  • Climate-focused economic development
  • Heat-adapted urban structures

Continuity for success

The building blocks of the roadmap have already been tested and assessed in pilot projects. The roadmap is to be seen as a living document, which must continue to be developed as an ongoing process. It is therefore appropriate that the dynaklim network has continued to work on it after the project officially ended in September 2014. An example of successful implementation is the "Klimacheck –ADAPTUS" tool. On the dynaklim web page, companies can examine the relevance of climate change to their own enterprise and look at potential measures.

In addition to the strong content components, the transferability of the project was particularly convincing to KlimaExpo.NRW; because other regions are already benefiting from both the suggestions for action and the experience gained from the development of the Roadmap 2020.

"The dynaklim network has developed important contributions for a flexible and forward-thinking approach to future climate change with the Roadmap 2020 and many other products – for the Ruhr metropolis and for the whole federal state of NRW. The Roadmap process and the work within the network will also continue in 2015: Get involved and help to shape the future of your region!"
