ista International GmbH: Correctly assessing energy use

ista is one of the world’s leading companies in the field of improving energy efficiency in buildings, specialising in the individual recording, invoicing and transparent visualising of energy use data. ‘Submetering’ is the technical term for this. Tenants in apartment houses receive a yearly invoice showing their precisely measured individual use and associated costs. Each tenant only pays his actual individual share, enabling him to consciously control his own energy use. The European Commission estimates the potential savings through submetering in apartment buildings to be from 15 per cent to as much as 30 per cent.

Climate protection objective:

  • Reduction of the average CO2 emissions of the German company car fleet by 13% by 2018

Through the ‘Heating aware, Cash to spare’ model project, ista and the German Energy Agency (dena) and other partners are demonstrating how much heating energy can be saved through the timely provision of energy use information in apartment houses.

Heating aware – Cash to spare

An essential key to greater energy efficiency is the further increase in consumption transparency through individual energy use summaries prepared over the course of the year. ista, together with the German Energy Agency (dena), the German Tenants’ Association and the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety, has launched the model project ‘Heating aware, Cash to spare’. As well as an annual account, the tenants receive monthly information on their individual energy consumption – which is available digitally on a website or as a smartphone app. In 2015, ista won the German Corporate Social Responsibility Award for this initiative.

Employees are ambassadors for sustainability

Since 2009 ista has pursued a total sustainability strategy and has been the only company in the sector to publish a yearly sustainability report. Additionally, ista is notable for its Corporate Social Responsibility commitment and has also introduced Corporate Volunteering Days: staff members can volunteer as sustainability ambassadors and are given an extra day off. In 2014, the scheme was named 'initiative of the month' by the Ministry for Families, Children, Youth, Culture and Sports of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.

ista sets itself a public climate protection goal

ista is committing itself publicly at KlimaExpo.NRW to additional climate protection measures. The Essen-based company is setting itself the target of reducing the average CO2 emissions of the German company car fleet by 13% by 2018. Indicators for the target achievement are the amount of fuel used per 100 km driven and the average CO2 emissions per km of the vehicles according to manufacturer’s data (ECE Standard).
